  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------
  7. Icons Control is designed to display as many Windows icons as possible in a 
  8. 10x10 grid. Icons can be copied, renamed, and erased with a click of the 
  9. mouse. Icons Control can even display icons embedded inside DLL or EXE files. 
  10. Displayed icons can be edited, converted to bitmaps, or extracted to ICO 
  11. format (in the DLL or EXE viewing mode.)  In addition, 32x32-pixel bitmaps 
  12. can also be converted to ICO format for use with Windows 3.1. This version 
  13. offers the ability to convert and extract icons in batch mode, thus saving a
  14. considerable amount of time for those of you with large number of icons to 
  15. process. Furthermore, any portion of the screen can be captured into an icon 
  16. or bitmap. For a complete description of Icons Control, please refer to the 
  17. help file accessible by clicking on the Help icon from outside as well as
  18. inside the program.

  21. INSTALLATION
  22. ------------
  23. Run SETUP from the Windows file manager.  You will be asked to enter a 
  24. directory to install Icons Control (default is Icnctrl.)  For users who 
  25. download the Icons Control package from the internet, you may need to download
  26. a copy of VBRUN300.DLL from the same site.  Since VBRUN300.DLL is about 300K 
  27. and almost everyone running a Visual Basic application have it, I am not 
  28. including it in the zip file to save disk space and download time.  Users who 
  29. wish to receive the software on a 3.5" floppy disk will have every files 
  30. needed (including the VBRUN300.DLL) to run the software.

  32. NOTE: During installation, you may run into copying errors such as 
  33.       "COMMDLG.DLL IS IN USE. PLEASE CLOSE ALL APLLICATIONS AND RE-ATTEMPT 
  34.       SETUP". Just click IGNORE and continue.  This is because you don't have 
  35.       the file sharing setup properly in your Windows environment.  You can 
  36.       avoid these warnings by copying the vshare.386 file into your 
  37.       \windows\system directory and using a text editor to insert the line 
  38.       device=vshare.386 in the [386 Enhanced] section of your system.ini file.
  39.       Otherwise, the software should run normally withou this modification 
  40.       despite of the warnings.

  43. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
  44. ---------------------
  45. * Any computer running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 (a 386DX or better is recommended.)
  46. * A standard VGA (a Windows-accelerated graphic board is recommended.)
  47. * A mouse or trackball.
  48. * Sound blaster or compatible device (optional)
  49.  
  50. Icons Control has been developed and tested on a 486DX66 with 8MB of RAM, a 
  51. 1 MB Diamond Stealth 24 Windows accelerator board (at screen resolutions 
  52. 640x480x16, 640x480x256, 640x480x65536, 800x600x256, 800x600x65536,
  53. 1024x768x16, and 1024x768x256) and a trackball and mouse.  It has also
  54. been tested on a 100 MHz Pentium-based machine with 16 MB of RAM, a 1 MB 
  55. Diamond Stealth 64 SE (PCI) with the same above settings.

  57. NOTE: Icons Control may not run properly on video modes higher than 65,536 
  58.       colors. If you encounter "OUT OF MEMORY" errors when running Icons 
  59.       Control, I recommend running Windows at a lower color depth. Some of 
  60.       you may confuse between color depth and resolution. Color depth 
  61.       determine the number of colors are available for displaying images 
  62.       (16, 256, 64K, or 16M (24-bit color.) Screen resolution is the number 
  63.       of pixels available on screen (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, or 1280x1024.)

  66. REGISTRATION
  67. ------------
  68. Icons Control is both freeware and shareware.  Freeware users are free to use 
  69. it to view, copy, mode, delete, and rename icons.  Icons Control even 
  70. displays icons embedded inside DLL and EXE files.  The displayed icons cannot 
  71. be extracted, edited, or converted.  The extraction, editing, and conversion 
  72. functions are only available in the registered versions (shareware.)  There 
  73. is no evaluation period to use Icons Control.  You may use it as long as you 
  74. want.  But in order to use the above-mentioned functions, you must register 
  75. to obtain the registered version.

  78. PAYMENT TERMS
  79. -------------
  80. Registration is $25.  Registered users will receive the most recent version 
  81. through internet email (uuencoded.) If you prefer to receive the software on 
  82. a 3.5" floppy disk, the fee is $29.  As of this writing, I only accept money 
  83. orders, cashier checks, bank checks, or personal checks (MUST be payable 
  84. through a U.S. bank).  International users can transfer the $25 fee to my 
  85. Bank of America account directly.  This type of payment requires an 
  86. additional $10 because BoA charges my account $10 for the transfer fee. 
  87. Send me e-mail for my account number and confirmation.  Compuserve users 
  88. can register on-line and obtain the registered version within 24 hours.

  96. A single user license permits a user to use Icons Control only on a single
  97. computer.  Licensed users may use the program on different computers as long 
  98. as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it is being 
  99. used at another, or on a network by more than one user at a time.
